DAY SIGNS of the MAYAN CALENDAR

imix

A sign of the beginnings of things; often translated to mean the wind before Creation. (In parts of Central America, however, it is the eleventh sign.)

ik

A sign often interpreted as breath - that is, an action by the Creator upon matter with the result being the germination of life.

akbal

A sign of night and darkness; consequently associated with the womb, the prenatal state.

kan

Associated with the lizard, it is a sign of youth in both its exuberance and ignorance... among nations, a sign of Juventud.

chichan

A sign of the snake that sheds its skin many times before dying... it is, consequently, associated with age and experience.

cimi

The death sign. Its situation implied that the Maya viewed life as only the first stage of the soul-journey.

manik

Following death, this is the sign of descent into the Underworld - often represented by a deer, sometimes by a hand, sinking beneath the waves.

lamat

Another animal sign, this of a rabbit... sometimes other rodents... symbols of fecundity.

muluc

A fish or water sign - some interpretations from Central America, not unlike contemporary Christians, view it as a sign of religious devotion.

oc

Sign of the dog (visible on the glyph), it has been associated with the animal nature - sexuality for its own sake as differentiated from lamat's procreativity.

chuen

Associated with the monkey... a sign of creativity, especially in the arts and sciences (among the Maya, science and religion were closely correlated)

eb

A sign associated with a road or, especially, bridge... often viewed in the context of the soul's journey through the Underworld.

ben

A sign of reeds or grass that is often symbolic of a ladder, a means of climbing upwards through the World Tree from the Underworld to the sky.

ix

The tiger - a sign of powerful sorcerers whose domain is the Overworld (whose stars mirror a spotted jaguar's hide).

men

The muan bird, sometimes a quetzal or owl... that which takes flight from the earth.

cib

A sign of the vulture or other scavenger bird - eaters of the soul-carrion that, in Asia, might be called karma.

caban

A sign associated with beeswax, hence, a heaping up of flowing substances, often sexual... where mountains exist it is the volcano's sign.

eznab

Flint - more specifically, the sacrificial knife with which hearts were removed and offered up, hence, the paraphernalia of religion.

cauac

The flood sign - a magnification of its opposite, muluc, a sweeping away by water preparatory to...

ahau

The sign of revolutions and the end. All cycles terminated, kings are overthrown and, every 5,124 years, an old world passes and a new one is generated at 4 ahau. The next great revolution… sometime misread as apocalypse but, in fact, a revolution of the spirit occurred on the winter solstice, 2012.
