THE INSURGENCE of
CHAN SANTA CRUZ
BOOK EIGHT:
THE SECOND of the BOOKS of CHANGE
CHAPTER
THIRTY
Salvador Alvarado had had leisure,
now, to peruse documents left by his predecessors and the events of Texas
brought to mind a statement Garcilazo had made on his
Merida excursion... "if the chances of fortune
place me in the position of acting in a military capacity against the just
complaints of the Yucatecan people... I would resign
my commission."
Here was certain evidence of
disloyalty! Cabling Carranza that Yucatan still thrived with reactionaries
based in New Orleans and Havana, Alvarado added his suspicions that the jefe of the Territory was a member of the hated Junta Pacifista... after all, so many of its principals had gathered
in Quintana Roo at one time or another... voluntarily
or not.
Carranza's reply... though coded...
seems to have influenced the Governor towards holding Garcilazo
to his principles. Rather than authorizing an invasion explicitly, the First
Chief merely suggested this potentially disloyal officer be replaced. Again, Garcilazo was ordered to release Plank and present himself
at Peto for reassignment.
Again he refused...
and, this time, in writing.
